Iranian boats said to enter Kuwaiti waters Council protects Arab interests and security: Al-Sager

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 17: Three Iranian military boats entered the Kuwaiti regional waters Monday, reports Al-Shahid daily quoting sources.
Disclosing the Iranian military boats reached the Kuwaiti well number 11, known as Al-Durrah, sources said the radars of the Coast Guard Administration spotted the boats when they entered Kuwait at 5:00 pm Monday. Sources stated the radars followed the boats until they reached Al-Durrah, prompting the Kuwaiti marine boats to follow the outsiders. However, the Iranian boats withdrew before the marine forces arrived at the location, sources added.
Sources clarified the motive behind the entry of the Iranian boats to Kuwait has not been identified until now. Al-Durrah is located in the northern part of the Gulf in the continental shelf between Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Sources said it includes oil and gas wells with natural gas reserves estimated at about 200 million cubic meters.

Sources confirmed the concerned departments at the Ministry of Interior (MoI) have submitted an incident report to Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Khaled, who forwarded a memo to the Cabinet in this regard. Sources added the Cabinet will most likely send an official protest to the Iranian authorities.
Meanwhile, the Arab and International Relations Council approved its system Tuesday - the last day of a two-day meeting slated for the discussion of issues concerning the system.
Council Chairman Mohamed Al-Sager explained the establishment was announced during the August 2009 meeting. He said the council handles issues concerning relations between the Arab countries and other nations, indicating Kuwait has approved the proposed establishment of the council’s headquarters in the country on the condition that the system should be reviewed.

He added the council will meet three times a year and any Arab country can host the meeting provided an application in this regard is forwarded to the council.
Al-Sager stated the council protects Arab interests and focuses on strengthening relations among Arab nations to maintain security in the region.
With the support of other Arab organizations, the council aims to bridge the gap between Arabs on various issues, especially since the support of Arab countries to different Palestinian factions has disrupted efforts towards a peaceful resolution between Hamas and Fatah, he revealed.
Asserting the council is neutral, Al-Sager stressed the council will take decisions without giving in to pressure from outside parties. He emphasized the importance of initiating a dialogue between Arabs and Iran, as well as Arabs and Turkey.
He said the council will play a crucial role in handling the Western Sahara case with Morocco, douse tension between Egypt and Algeria due to the football match, and look into the problems in Yemen and Somalia. He stressed the council does not accept donations from any Arab country to ensure neutrality in its decision-making process.
