Govt takes urgent measures to track down illegal expats Panel to work for better rights of workers
KUWAIT CITY, Feb 26: The Cabinet has instructed various government authorities to closely coordinate with the Ministry of Interior to track down expatriates, who have violated the Residency Law, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily quoting sources.
Sources said the Cabinet, in its previous meeting, tackled the recommendations of the Permanent Committee for Organizing Expatriate Personnel in the Private Sector. Sources confirmed the Ministry of Interior recently issued decision number 2333/2 to clamp down on the Residency Law violators.
On the other hand, Al-Shahed daily quoted sources from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor as saying that the Higher Committee for Expatriate Labor Affairs had a series of meetings with the concerned authorities to discuss ways to address the problems of expatriate workers and protect their rights. Sources affirmed the committee recognizes the need to take tangible steps to improve the working conditions of the expatriates in line with the vision of HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah to transform Kuwait into a commercial hub in the region.
Sources added the ministry remains committed to its promise to look for better alternatives to the sponsorship system. Sources disclosed the ministry took a number of steps to protect the rights of expatriate workers, such as the proposed establishment of the Public Manpower Authority, which will be tasked to settle labor disputes and deal with labor-related issues.
Sources also divulged the ministry’s plan to offer training courses for national workers to teach them skills required in the private labor sector, in coordination with the training institutes.
