‘Fatwa’ lawyers said to have quit over salaries Coordination committee set up

KUWAIT CITY, March 4: As many as 150 legal counselors and lawyers working in the Fatwa and Legislation Administration have submitted their resignation, protesting against the government’s stalling of the approval of their demands for salary raises and issuing a new law for the administration, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
Tens of counselors and lawyers gathered at the office of the administration’s director and declared their refusal to receive any government tenders or administrative cases. In the meantime, a coordination committee was setup and it declared that counselors and lawyers will not represent the public treasury in courts.

The committee has demanded that the director take a firmer stance against the government’s stalling techniques since the demands were first submitted two years ago. The group expressed its refusal for the unconstitutional way the government is dealing with the administration, in addition to demanding full independence of their administration.

A member of the administration Dr Abdullah Al-Rashidi said the administration’s laws have become too old and it is time they were changed. Another member Ghadeer Hayaty said the members are fed up of government’s unfulfilled promises. Her colleague Osama Al-Shaheen also complained about the workload the members face, in addition to government pressures “which is unacceptable and will be faced with further actions.”
