Govt queried on nuke plan ‘Harness solar energy’

KUWAIT CITY, April 12: MP Saad Zunaifeer has called for the establishment of a center for renewable energy to diversify the sources of energy in Kuwait and prepare for the possible depletion of oil in the future.
In a press statement Tuesday, Zunaifeer stressed the need for Kuwait to rethink its plan to use nuclear energy, considering the recent nuclear disaster in Japan. He also proposed the use of solar energy to take advantage of the sunny weather in Kuwait throughout the year.

Meanwhile, MP Abdulrahman Al-Anjari has forwarded some questions to acting State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Roudhan Al-Roudhan on the intention of the interim government to develop a nuclear program for peaceful purposes, particularly for the operation of additional power and water desalination stations. He also sought clarifications on rumors that the interim government has signed agreements and memoranda of understanding on the nuclear project with many countries.

Following are the questions submitted to Al-Roudhan:
- Why did Kuwait decide to establish nuclear power stations? Please submit copies of studies and consultations done in this regard, if any.
- How long will it take to establish the stations?  What steps will be taken to ensure the appointment of national workers to manage the stations?
- How much is the budget for this project?  Please submit a copy of the feasibility study, if any.
- Did Kuwait coordinate with other GCC countries on the implementation of the project?  Is there joint program for the establishment of nuclear power plants?
- Is there a study on the security and safety aspects of establishing a nuclear power plant in Kuwait?  Is it true that the interim government intends to construct the plant in an island, far from the densely populated areas?
- Are private companies, institutions and organizations involved in the studies conducted on the project?

Please submit copies of agreements and memoranda of understanding signed with other countries, as well as local and foreign institutions, to study the project, if any.
