Kuwait discusses port issue with Iraq ‘Talks with Iraqi, Iranian lawmakers positive’

BERN, Oct 18, (KUNA): Kuwait’s chief delegate to the Inter-Parliamentary Union talks being held here said Tuesday that discussions with Iraqi and Iranian lawmakers were highlighted by keenness to support and develop relations.
“We discussed the Mubarak (Al-Kabir) Port issue amid Kuwait’s continuing execution of the project and its commitment for Iraq not to be harmed by it,” Kuwait’s National Assembly Speaker, Jassim Al-Khorafi told reporters after a sideline meeting with Iraqi house speaker, Osama Al-Nujaifi.
“We also discussed Iraq’s exit from the seventh article (of the UN Charter) noting Kuwait’s concern over the matter, and for the need for Iraq to carry out UN obligations.” The meeting was extremely positive and lacked “negative statements”, whereby “each side had felt the keenness of the other in supporting relations, “ he said.
On another meeting with Iran’s chief parliamentary delegate, Ali Larijani, he said Kuwait’s relations with Iran were good on both the government and parliamentary levels.
He said he had discussed with Larijani, the assassination attempt on the life of the Saudi Ambassador to the US, which was carried by an Iranian national.
Larijani had noted that the assailant was a “delinquent” and was banished from Iran over 30 years ago, Al-Khorafi said.
The Kuwaiti chief lawmaker said he had explained to his Iranian counterpart, the need for Iran to be transparent on these matters in order to prevent apparent negative reactions from regional sides, and noting to Kuwait’s keenness on transparent relations with their Iranian neighbours.
