‘New list of Bedouns for citizenship under review’ ‘Protesting security personnel will be prosecuted’

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 18: The strengthened coordination between the Interior Ministry and Central System for Remedying the Status of Illegal Residents (CSRSIR) is slowly bearing fruit with the expected announcement of a new list of Bedouns who will be granted citizenship.

This came after a series of ‘horse-trading’ and exploitation of the issue by the opposition former MPs who made matters worse and abandoned the Bedouns.

Speaking during the reception for Yemeni Nobel Peace Laureate for 2011 Tawakul Karman, CSRSIR Chairperson Saleh Al-Fadhalah confirmed the government is currently reviewing files of 34,000 Bedouns to determine those who deserve citizenship.  He said Kuwait is not the only country dealing with the Bedoun issue, which is also common in other countries in the GCC and the rest of the world.

Meanwhile, the Army intelligence and the State Security police have been keeping a close watch on the police and military personnel who may have taken part in the demonstrations organized by the bedoun in Sulaibiya, Taima and Ahmadi, reports Alam Alyawm daily.

The daily quoting security sources said the personnel who have participated in the demonstrations will be arrested and referred to the military intelligence.

However, according to sources about 80 such men have taken part in the demonstration and they were expected to be referred to the Public Prosecution.

The daily added about 30 teenagers were also arrested for taking part in the demonstration. However, they were taken to a police station and released without charge.

On the issue of military personnel, the daily said, if they are found guilty, their services will be terminated with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior has set up a tent in Block 10 of Sulaibiya which will act as its headquarters to control demonstrations by bedoun, reports Alam Alyawm daily.

According to reports anti-riot police will be in force to quell any demonstration the bedoun are trying to hold.
