‘Work permits to be limited to projects’ 300,000 residencies to be verified

KUWAIT CITY, March 18: According to statistics issued by government sources, the authenticity of residence permit of about 300,000 residents in Kuwait needs to be verified in cooperation with the concerned authorities, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.

Of these 250,000 people are registered as domestic workers but they do not live with their sponsors because their details were not registered during the recent census, and which means a majority of them are jobless.

Meanwhile, sources unveiled about 120,000 foreigners were not recorded during the census although they hold valid residence permit which means although they have valid residence they come to Kuwait only twice a year to maintain their residence status in tact.

In addition to these, 50 percent of the addresses recorded in the civil IDs of residents are a fake.
Meanwhile, the labor sector of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor will soon work on the codification of work permits by limiting their economic activities, labor-intensive activities and to encourage high-density in the economic capital, especially in the private sector, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting reliable sources.
The sources added the work permits will be limited to projects and vital activities to reduce the import of marginal laborers. The work permits will also be issued after verifying the suitability of workforce.

Meanwhile, the daily quoting the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Ahmed Rujeib considers issuing a ministerial decree to amend the regulations concerning the mechanism of recruiting foreign workers.
The sources pointed out that this decision is part of the ministry’s third annual plan for 2012/2013 within the government agenda to develop mechanisms for monitoring the companies which recruit laborers and to organize the foreign labor.

The sources noted the objective of the project is to reduce import of laborers who have no real economic value.
