‘Capital punishment in case of wilful nuclear waste pollution’ Tough penalties in new environment law: EPA

KUWAIT CITY, June 18: Deputy Director-General of the Environment Public Authority (EPA) Ali Haider said the EPA is preparing the environment protection draft bill to send it to the Fatwa and Legislation Department in the government for look into the legal terms of the bill.
Ali Haider pointed out the EPA had recently received many suggestions from some MPs on the Environ-mental Protection Act in Kuwait.
He added the EPA will compare the proposals submitted by the MPs with those prepared by the EPA before submitting them to the Fatwa and Legislation Department.
Haider said he expects the draft bill to be submitted to the National Assembly during the next parliamentary session. It will be submitted as one of the priority bills.
Haider said the law includes not less than 134 articles. He pointed out the chapter on penalties in this law is big, comprehensive and includes all environmental issues. Haider added there are many tough penalties in this law.
Haider noted a person can even be sentenced to death if it is found that he/she intentionally polluted the environment by toxic nuclear waste.
Haider said he is optimistic the law will be approved during the next Parliament session.
