KUWAIT CITY, July 17: Calls for the amendment of the Constitution and the repeated attempts by some to meddle with judicial affairs will only exacerbate the political problems in the country, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting members of the ‘We Broke the Silence’ Group.

In a press statement, the group pointed out, “We are the children of Kuwait; hence, we will suffer the brunt of the worsening political situation, which negatively affects our economic, social and cultural development efforts.”

According to the group, they outrightly reject the proposed amendment of the Constitution and the blatant interference in the affairs of the judiciary. “We remain committed to our objective to thwart attempts to distort the Kuwaiti identity, following the example of our ancestors. We have broken the silence. We want to triumph over the challenges to protect our beloved country,” they added.

Urging the decision-makers to reaffirm that Kuwait is a constitutional monarchy, the group stressed the need to protect the Constitution which stipulates the powers of HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. “We outrightly reject calls for the revision of any constitutional article, as well as the interference in judicial affairs, particularly among those who have been raising doubts on the integrity of the Kuwaiti courts and those who have dared question the court rulings,” the group asserted.

Enumerating their demands, the group called for the establishment of an independent authority to oversee electoral proceedings, in addition to finding effective solutions to the recurring problems in the health,
education, sports and security sectors. They also emphasized the importance of finding alternative sources of income rather than allowing the country to totally depend on oil. They wish to see the formation of a government with the ability to handle national affairs; away from discrimination, tribalism and sectarianism. “We badly need a technocrat government.  We should also push for the activation of the role of the Emergency, Strategic Planning and Disaster Control Committee to handle emergency cases; while the proposed modification of the electoral constituency system should be referred to the concerned authorities to ascertain that the change will be beneficial to Kuwait,” the group concluded. 

Meanwhile, the Youth Movement Group dismissed some of the demands issued by youth groups for amendment of the constituency system, election of the governmental body and so on, referring to them as immature, reports Al-Shahid daily.

In a press statement, the group stressed that these demands require proper analysis and thorough assessment, indicating that they can provoke sedition and stir up tribal and sectarian conflicts, as well as open doors for foreign intervention in the country’s affairs.

The group bid other youth groups to deliberate on such demands without haste before announcing them publicly.
