‘Collective transport’ plan draws criticism ‘Surface metro better’

KUWAIT CITY, July 25: Chairman of Kuwait Society for Traffic Safety Dr Bader Al-Mutar strongly objected the direction taken by Ministry of Education in the execution of the Collective Transport Project that would be compulsory for the school students from next year, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

He stressed that this decision was taken for the benefit of some public transport companies and not to reduce the traffic problem in the country.

He indicated that if this project is executed, it should be applied to all students without exception, adding that there should be special lanes created for them as in most of the developed countries.

He questioned the effectiveness of the project, indicating that it would not help in the traffic problem as the increase of vehicles has already taken its toll on the roads.

Meanwhile, he stressed that 116,000 vehicles enter the country each year, a fact that could indicate disaster for a country that did not extend or improve its road network since the 1980s.

He suggested establishing a Surface Metro Network instead of a subway, which could prove to be ideal solution to the current traffic problem.

He revealed that Kuwait Society for Traffic Safety would soon submit an analysis report on an integrated project, which would include causes and solutions for the traffic problem.
