‘Stand firm against threats from individuals supported from abroad’ Not decided on elections: Juwaihel

KUWAIT CITY, July 30: Mohammed Al-Juwaihel, MP of the invalidated 2012 parliament, has called on the authorities to stand firm against any threats or weird ideas by individuals who have support from abroad, reports Al-Sabah daily.

In a chat with Al-Sabah satellite TV channel, he stressed the political atmosphere in Kuwait is distorted as the people have now become politicians and constitutional experts. He added the plan to amend the current constituencies to a single-constituency system only aims to control specific voices.

He also said “it’s a problem giving voters the right to vote for four candidates because the process reduces the value of the voters themselves, indicating the problem is with the number of votes and not the number of constituencies. He maintained that one vote for one electorate will curb the primaries phenomenon and vote buying, and in the end, “efficient candidates will win seats in the National Assembly”.

Pronouncement
According to Al-Juwaihel, he has yet to decide on running in the coming elections, and “I will not make a pronouncement in that regard unless I have reviewed the rules governing the electoral procedure and consulted Kuwaitis in the diwaniyas for sincere advice”.

For his part, former MP Essam Al-Dabous said the government seeks to change the rules of the political game and beat the so-called majority through its attempts to modify the country’s electoral system, although the tactic is not justified, reports Al-Kuwaitiya daily.

He wonders if there is any need to modify the constituencies at all, and noted “this approach only serves the interests of the government”. He pointed out that the plan for constituency amendment does not satisfy the citizens, as the issue is related to the future of the nation and besides, it will open the door for intensive political escalation.
