‘Support vital for drug addict to kick the habit’

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 1: A person who decides to give up drugs needs a strong support system to totally kick the habit, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting President of Bashaer Al-Khair Association Sheikh Abdul Hameed Al-Bilali.

Sheikh Abdul Hameed made the statement at the recently-concluded annual Iftar party organized by the association for those who have been cured of drug addiction at the Drug Rehabilitation Center. Among those who attended the event included officials of the center and several members of the association, which is specialized in treating drug addiction.

Pointing out that a wise person has the capacity to differentiate between good and bad, Sheikh Abdul Hameed asserted the wise knows what is best for him and he takes the necessary steps to have a comfortable life. He said a drug addict’s decision to wean himself from dependence on drugs can open several doors for him; making it easy to reconnect with his family and to have a normal life. He admitted this is a difficult situation; hence, the need for a decisive act and strong support system.

Meanwhile, Head of the Drug Addiction Treatment Team at the center Abdul Kareem Al-Khabaz expla-ined the annual Iftar gathering is one of the most important activities for those who have successfully completed the drug rehabilitation program. “The event makes them feel they are part of one big happy family. It gives them a chance to realize their objective of having a normal life after being addicted to drugs.” He added.

On the other hand, Raafat Askar, a psychologist, disclosed it is difficult to deal with drug addicts as they need to exert tremendous efforts to completely kick the habit with the assistance not only of the experts in this field, but most importantly their families. He said the association has several success stories when it comes to drug addiction treatment — a source of pride for the members.
