‘Guirge’an loses it authenticity, simplicity’ Cost increases significantly in recent times: Kuwaiti
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 4: Kuwaitis unanimously agree that popular traditional event “Guirge’an” isn’t celebrated by Kuwaitis only. The event has become a seasonal activity and an industry by itself, in terms of design, components and means of celebration.
As per public opinion KUNA gathered in this regard, Guirge’an has clearly observed many changes to become more than a simple and spontaneous event, as the depletion of family budgets turns out to be the hallmark of this popular custom, besides becoming a show to draw attention.
Hashim Al-Mosawi, a Kuwaiti family provider, said Guirge’an lost its authenticity and simplicity ever since the citizens started exaggerating its celebration.

He added the cost involved in organizing Guirge’an has increased significantly in recent times, as the event is now celebrated in hotels. In addition to lavish gifts and high-branded chocolates which are presented to families and friends invited to the event, while photos of invitees who stay late are taken until Suhour is served.
Another citizen Salwa Al-Arbash said celebrating Guirge’an accompanies modern aspects such as inviting artists or singers to the event, and as a result, special preparations are made and decoration of the hall and accessories are done by experts who charge huge amounts for their services.
Another citizen Hajj Mohammed Al-Abdulwahid disclosed that children were happier in the past than they are these days, although the activities of Guirge’an celebrated in the past were simple, indicating there were no prior preparations to strain the family budget.
