‘Majority’ allegedly in internal conflicts ICM urges members to prepare for next polls

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 7: The Islamic Constitu-tional Movement (ICM) has urged its members to prepare for the next elections whether the electoral constituency is amended or not, reports Al-Shahed daily quoting sources.

Sources revealed the ICM has instructed its young members to take positive steps. Sources said the movement intends to form two teams - one will be in charge of providing support for those who oppose the proposed amendment of the electoral system and the other will prepare for the elections in case the system is modified. Sources added the political office of the ICM has been holding intensive meetings to discuss the recent developments in the political arena.

On the other hand, the Majority Bloc in the annulled Parliament is allegedly experiencing internal conflicts, particularly between the Popular Labor Bloc (PLB) members and some independent lawmakers in the Fourth and Fifth constituencies. Sources said the disagreement between MP Musallam Al-Barrak and Obaid Al-Wasmi has reached its peak as the latter is said to have started questioning the former’s attendance in the hearing of cases concerning the Mutair tribe. This has divided the tribe members into two - one supports Al-Barrak and the other supports Al-Wasmi.

Sources disclosed there is a brewing conflict between PLB member MP Khalid Al-Tahous, who entered the Parliament through primaries, and Khalid Shukair. It can be recalled that Al-Tahous issued statements against primaries after joining the Parliament. Shukair, on the other hand, obtained a parliamentary seat through the concerted efforts of the minorities and he belongs to Mutair tribe which has six lawmakers. This is allegedly considered a threat to the legislative position of Al-Tahous. If the tribe decides to support other candidates, it will be the ‘end’ for Al-Tahous because he has neglected the tribe and he serves in the interest of PLB, sources explained.

Moreover, Al-Watan Arabic daily has reported that MP Mohammad Al-Khalifa has accused the government of trying to empty the Constitution of its contents by pushing for the amendment of the electoral constituency system or referring the current system to the Constitutional Court.

Urging the Kuwaitis to stand united against those who want to violate their rights, Al-Khalifa called on the government to analyze well the political situation before finalizing its decision on the amendment of the electoral system.

In the meantime, Dr Ahmad Motee Al-Azmi, member of the annulled Parliament, wondered why some people raised doubts on the constitutionality of the five-constituency electoral system, considering it has been approved some years ago. He claimed the government wants to convince the entire nation that the Electoral Law is unconstitutional. He asked, “Where was the government when it voted in favor of the system? Where were its constitutional experts when the law was ratified?”

Al-Azmi asserted those who question the constitutionality of the system has nothing in mind but to instigate chaos. He said the government should dissolve the reinstated legislature and call for fresh elections in accordance with the Election Law.
