Number of divorce cases in Kuwait rises over the years 6,260 reported in 2011, an increase of 4.8 pct

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 10: Statistics issued by the Department of Legal Authentications said the number of divorce cases in Kuwaiti courts witnessed a rise from the rest of the years beginning in 1982 until 2011, reports Al-Rai daily.

The statistics said 6,260 cases of divorce were reported in 2011 between different nationalities, including Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis.

The number of divorce cases among Kuwaiti couples reached 3,809 cases and the number of divorce cases between Kuwaiti husband and non-Kuwaiti wife was 1,280 during 2011.

The statistics also showed the number of divorce cases in 2010 was 5,972 and whereas in 2011 it reached 6,260 cases an increase of 4.8 percent, and the average annual number of divorces was 5,737 cases from 2007 to 2011.

Statistics pointed out that the total divorce cases in 2011 are distributed to varying degrees depending on the nationality, reaching 60.8 percent Kuwaiti couples and 20.4 percent for non-Kuwaitis couples.
It showed that the highest proportion of cases of divorce was among couples who hold intermediate school certificates, 29.7 percent among couples who hold secondary school certificates, those with university qualifications 21.0 percent.

The highest rate of divorce 25.8 percent was among women who hold university degrees, 24.6 among those who hold diploma certificates and 22.4 percent among those who hold secondary school certificates.

In terms of age group the highest rate of divorce was for couples in the age group of 35 and 44 years old and at a rate of 25.1 percent, followed by the age group from 25 to 29 years 22.4 percent, 45 years and above 20.5 percent.

The highest proportion of cases for divorce wives was in the age group 25 to 29 years, reaching 23.4 percent, and the age group from 20 to 24 years by 22.4 percent, followed by age group from 35 to 44 years by 20.3 percent.

The Mubarak Al-Kabir Governorate topped the list of divorces while the Hawalli Governorate came in last.
