MPs call on sides to heed Amiri message Awazem criticise Majority Bloc
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 13: Several MPs have called on everyone to ponder on the message of HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on the occasion of the last 10 days of Ramadan, especially since he expressed his concern over the incorrect political practices which hinder the economic growth of the country.
MP Yousef Al-Zalzalah has asked his colleagues, who took an oath to be loyal to the country and the Amir, to understand the speech of the Amir. He pointed out the Amir has urged everyone to pay attention to what is happening around us. He also quoted the Amir as saying that incorrect practices have hindered the development efforts in Kuwait; hence, it is unacceptable to continue in this manner.
Al-Zalzalah added the Amir praised the judiciary and stressed that the law is above everyone, so national security and safety must be on top of the priority list. He asserted the Constitution guarantees freedom for the people but it does not mean everyone can take advantage of this privilege to instigate chaos. “The Amir’s objectives are clear and he has put his hands on the wounds. If we are committed to our oath then we must work in line with the Amir’s recommendations,” he concluded.
MP Dr Maasouma Al-Mubarak said HH the Amir has correctly hit the targets by raising issues concerning the citizens and the nation, while attributing the slow growth of the country to the wrong political practices. She asserted the authorities should not be lenient towards anyone who undermines national unity and that Kuwait’s interest is above all else. She believes every citizen has a responsibility to foil attempts to tamper with national principles.
On the other hand, former candidate from the Third Constituency Safa Al-Hashim said the Amir’s speech focused on several issues affecting the Kuwaiti society. She added, “The strongly-worded statement of the Amir on the MPs, who had been calling for street demonstrations, was a clear indication that he outrightly rejects the incorrect political practices of these lawmakers.”
Al-Hashim also highlighted the fact that the Amir is proud of the judiciary and its independence. “For our part, we must support HH the Amir and strictly comply with his directives to strengthen national unity,” she added.
In another development, National Assembly Speaker Jassem Al-Kharafi explained his stay in the National Assembly is temporary as he just needs to implement the Constitutional Court ruling on the annulment of the 2012 Parliament and reinstatement of its predecessor. He affirmed he will do only what is expected of him as speaker of the Parliament, adding that he had submitted to HH the Amir a letter about the inability of the Parliament to hold its sessions due to a lack of quorum, so the Amir will make the final decision.
Moreover, Al-Awazem tribe leader Sheikh Falah Bin Gamaa criticized the Majority Bloc on Sunday, saying “their actions violate the law and the Constitution”. He stressed the bloc’s actions “do not serve the interest of the country and harm its security and stability”. He hopes the bloc does not push through with its plan to boycott the upcoming legislative elections as their reasons for doing so are not important or justified and the government has the right to refer the issue to the Constitutional Court. He reiterated the tribe’s rejection of the so-called ‘constitutional emirate’.
Most of the Majority Bloc members belong to Kuwait’s leading tribes, such as Al-Awazem, Al-Mutair and Al-Rushaida. Sources revealed the tribes have started distancing themselves from the bloc’s calls for a constitutional emirate and a popular government, while the Islamic Constitutional Movement (ICM) supports these recommendations.
