Escape from defeat
CAN we ask who has authorized some citizens to speak on behalf of all of Kuwait? Can we ask who has given these people the right to prevent others from expressing their opinions? Can we ask who has given these men the authority to call upon the government ‘indirectly’ not to endorse the amendment of voting mechanism whereby each voter will be entitled to one vote only in their false belief Kuwaitis will boycott the elections?
This desperate call came on the heels of the amendment to the voting mechanism ... a call from those who know they don’t have political weight or those who had won seats to the Parliament by exploiting the loopholes in the previous election law that made representation based on sectarian and tribal lines and the incorrect sorting of popular segments and exclusion of other social components.
We say those (the militia of extortion) who favor a boycott and have issued calls in that regard have shown their true colors because they know their fate. This is the result of their past misdeeds which are of a criminal nature. One such folly includes storming into the National Assembly building. Now they face court proceedings.
In spite of the insolent attitudes shown by this group of people following the sublime speech of HH the Amir, we praise their decision to boycott the elections which includes contesting and casting their votes.
If it happens, it will be the first time the group will have kept its promise. We hope the group will not retract its decision but continue to stand firm on its decision unlike what its members have done in the past.
This boycott will give an opportunity for the youth, who have been exploited by others over the years and prevented from expressing themselves. The youth will have the chance to run for the next elections and pump fresh blood into a new Assembly.
Those who call for boycotting the elections are fully aware that they stand no chance in fair elections. When the voters express their free will there is no room for bargaining or favoritism, vote-buying through promises, services, appointments and unfair promotions or ‘favored’ medical treatments overseas as was the case in the past.
We are not exaggerating when we say the group was adamant, chose the path of civil disobedience and strayed away instead of rallying around the political leadership and show respect for the Constitution. By announcing they will boycott the elections, the majority group members have not only crossed the limits but given the impression that they alone own this country.
Over the years this militia of extortion has been pronouncing their positions but was quick to fall in line shamelessly as if nothing had happened.
It is unbelievable that these people talk a lot about principles but at the first opportunity run behind personal interests. Therefore, I say they will not stick to their promises because they do not want to lose the privileges which they enjoy, including the immunity that protects them from court cases.
One of them has even gone to the extent of saying, ‘I was born for this day’ (when he stormed the National Assembly building). Well, it is time for him to prove what he has said by sticking to his promise and boycotting the National Assembly elections. At least he will relieve us and relieve himself.
