LOS ANGELES, Nov 7, (Agencies): A tragic incident unfolded in Florida as a teenager's life was cut short during a high school 5K race. Knox MacEwen, a 14-year-old student at Western High School in Davie, Florida, and a member of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program, met an untimely end during a race organized by the program.
Following the completion of the race, young Knox suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Swiftly, he was rushed to Memorial Hospital Miramar, but tragically, he was later pronounced dead, as reported by NBC Miami.
Jimmy Arrojo, the school's principal, expressed his profound sadness in a message addressed to students, families, and staff. He said, "I am saddened to share tragic news impacting our Wildcat community. One of our JROTC students passed away this morning after being transported to the hospital. I want to offer my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, teachers, and classmates as they mourn this great loss."
Arrojo continued, "I ask our Wildcat community to rally around the family in prayer and support during this time of deep sorrow. Please know that grief counselors will be available on campus this week to meet with anyone needing assistance or support."
A GoFundMe page was established to support MacEwen's family. The page highlights Knox's involvement in the local community as a dedicated JROTC student and a volunteer in the children's ministry at his home church. He was cherished as a brother, son, grandson, nephew, and friend. The fundraising effort has already amassed over $56,000, a testament to the outpouring of support for the grieving family.
The family has faced unimaginable challenges, with Knox's mother, Julie, still in the process of recovering physically and financially from a hard-fought battle with cancer in the past year.
