16 contracts approved to transform Kuwait’s sewage and water systems

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 12: Government reports have confirmed the approval of 16 contracts over the last 10 years, the majority of which are with the Ministry of Public Works. It is expected that these contracts will greatly contribute to the development of the sewage system -- one of the prerequisites for realizing the State’s vision to become a financial and commercial center through the implementation of a cohesive infrastructure program and establishment of environmentally friendly residential areas. The reports revealed that the projects will be announced through the Central Agency for Public Tenders (CAPT), as per the timetable for each contract.

According to the reports, one of the most important projects is the study and preliminary design for the deep tunnel system to protect the environment and prevent sewage flows into Kuwait Bay. They explained this will be done through an integrated system for connecting emergency lines to all stations and rain outlets on tunnels; as well as to eliminate environmental problems resulting from the flow of sewage water into the sea, reduce environmental pollution and its impact on marine life, and reduce flooding.

This is in addition to a study on closing current sewage connections with rainwater drainage networks, and to divert water during emergency situations from pumping and purification stations to a treatment plant that will be established for this purpose. If the contract is awarded, the implementation period will be 36 months and it is expected to be tendered in March 2025.

The reports also mentioned two projects for the development, establishment, operation and maintenance of treated water systems in the northern and southern areas in order to increase agricultural crops, strengthen the food security system, and support the strategic stock of treated water. The tender for these two projects will most likely be announced in December with an implementation period of 60 months.
