New Delhi, Jul 19: The Delhi Police have arrested a 70-year-old man employed at the Kuwait embassy in Chanakyapuri for allegedly molesting a colleague within the mission complex, officials said on Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Mahla confirmed the incident, noting that both the victim, 20, and the accused are Indian citizens working as multi-tasking staffers at the embassy.

The incident came to light on July 11 when the woman filed a police complaint, alleging that the accused had molested her inside the embassy earlier that day. Following her complaint, a case was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 74 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), and an investigation commenced. The accused was arrested the same day and presented before the court, reports Hindustan Times.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Kuwait embassy said they will await the conclusion of the police investigation before taking any action. “As the case is being investigated by the police/ sub judice, the Embassy of the State of Kuwait shall wait for the outcome of the investigation/ court directive before taking any action,” the statement read. According to the Embassy’s official statement, “Both the alleged accused and the complainant, are Indian citizens, and no Kuwaiti citizen is involved in the case.”

The Embassy clarified that the complainant is part of the multi-tasking staff of an outsourcing company engaged by the Embassy for housekeeping duties. “The complainant is still reporting, as usual, to the Embassy for carrying out routine work,” the statement confirmed.
