KUWAIT CITY, Oct 24: The National Bureau for Human Rights has announced the commencement of the "Support Them" initiative, geared towards enhancing the quality of life for inmates, upholding their rights, and promoting the fair management of correctional facilities.
The initiative treats these facilities as centers for rehabilitation, where the fundamental principles for the treatment of prisoners, as outlined by the United Nations in 1955, are diligently applied, reports Al-Rai daily.
In a statement Ambassador Jassim Al-Mubaraki, president of the National Bureau for Human Rights, said, "Since its inception, the National Office for Human Rights has remained committed to supporting all national and community initiatives that contribute to the advancement of human rights, the safeguarding of civil and political rights, in accordance with international agreements and conventions, as well as Kuwaiti legislative requirements."
He further stated, "Today, the Bureau, through the Complaints and Grievances Committee, takes great pride in participating in the launch of a national initiative in collaboration with the community to bolster projects and programs within the correctional institution sector, benefiting the inmates under the banner 'Support Them.'
This initiative is a result of a strategic partnership with the Human Construction Society for Social Development and the Ministry of Interior, signifying a genuine call to action based on our national and humanitarian responsibility to enhance the delivery of humanitarian services to this demographic and provide a humane and dignified environment during their time in correctional institutions."
Al-Mubaraki expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Interior for their facilitation of the participation process in this notable initiative, which is expected to bolster Kuwait's standing in international human rights assessments. He also extended his thanks to all participants in the initiative, emphasizing the need for continued cooperation and communication among state institutions, civil society organizations, and active contributions to the progress, development, and nation-building.
