THIMPHU, May 16: Hussein Al-Musallam, the President of the International Swimming Federation, inaugurated the Aquatic Sports Center in the Kingdom of Bhutan, marking a significant stride in the federation's initiative to boost swimming across Asia.

Situated amidst the Himalayas at an elevation of 8,400 feet above sea level, the Water Sports Center stands as the world's first swimming facility in such high-altitude terrain. This landmark establishment is especially crucial for Bhutan, a country abundant in rivers and lakes, where drowning incidents are unfortunately common. The Bhutan Aquatics Center hosts swimming literacy programs and serves as a vital resource for saving children's lives.

Furthermore, this aquatic facility promises to promote public health awareness within the Bhutanese community. It will also attract elite swimmers from around the globe, including champions from America, Australia, and Europe, who seek high-altitude training opportunities. Moreover, it is anticipated to bolster sports tourism in Bhutan.

Al-Musallam commended the state-of-the-art infrastructure of the Aquatic Sports Center, hailing it as a beacon of modernity.
