KUWAIT CITY, Sept 11: The match between Kuwait’s national football team and Iraq, held at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in the second round of Group Two of the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers, has sparked significant governmental concern due to its poor organization and overcrowding issues. The match, marking the Blues' first World Cup qualifier since 2006, was marred by logistical failures that led to a frustrating experience for fans.

Despite the excitement of the match, which drew over 60,000 spectators—exceeding the stadium's capacity—poor organization was evident from the start. Many fans arrived at the gates five hours before kickoff, only to face overcrowding and delays. As gates closed, some spectators climbed fences to enter, and thousands ended up watching the game standing.

Compounding the issue, water was prohibited despite the high temperatures and humidity, leading to multiple cases of exhaustion among fans. The lack of adequate stadium parking forced many attendees to park in nearby areas and walk long distances, further adding to their discomfort. The poorly managed event and evident organizational lapses have raised concerns about Kuwait’s ability to host future tournaments, particularly the upcoming Gulf 26 tournament scheduled from December 21 to January 3.

In response to the situation, Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, the Minister of Information and Culture and Minister of State for Youth Affairs, has called for an investigation. The Public Authority for Sports has been instructed to work with the Kuwait Football Association to identify the reasons behind the disorganization and to take appropriate legal measures by regulations.

The Authority also announced that, in preparation for the Gulf 26, Minister Al-Mutairi will present a detailed organizational plan on October 7. This presentation will outline the procedural guidelines for the tournament, ensuring that future events meet international standards and are managed more effectively.
