KUWAIT CITY, Jan 20: The Director of the Public Authority for Agriculture, Nasser Taqi, announced plans to revive the Al-Omariya Zoo by conducting studies to develop its facilities and diversify its animal species. The goal is to restore the zoo and transform it into a popular tourist destination for animal lovers who have missed it for nearly seven years.
This announcement came as Taqi accompanied the Governor of Farwaniya, Sheikh Athbi Nasser Al-Athbi, on an inspection of the zoo in the Al-Omariya area recently. The purpose of the visit was to assess the latest developments and identify key requirements for the zoo’s revival. Taqi received the governor alongside Brigadier General Muhammad Mutlaq Al-Mutairi, Director of Security for Farwaniya Governorate; Brigadier General Nayef Al-Hajraf, his assistant; Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Kandari, Director of the Zoo; and a group of officials from various departments.
During the visit, the governor and the other officials were given a general tour of the park's facilities. They received detailed explanations of ongoing projects and future plans to develop this important facility. Discussions also focused on the fundamental requirements necessary to enhance the park’s role as a tourist attraction and explored ways for cooperation among the relevant parties.
The governor emphasized the importance of addressing deficiencies in the park and studying plans to develop this vital facility, which is considered a key part of Kuwait's agricultural and animal wealth. He called for collaboration with all relevant authorities to ensure the completion of necessary improvements.
This visit is part of the governor's ongoing efforts to monitor important local facilities, promote sustainable development, protect the environment, and enhance tourism attractions. The Farwaniya Zoo, established in 1966 and opened in 1968, has evolved over the years into a significant agricultural, tourism, and entertainment landmark, holding special memories for many Kuwaiti families.
In response, Nasser Taqi affirmed that the governor's visit is a culmination of efforts to contribute to the zoo’s reconstruction, as it serves as a key recreational space for local residents. He also clarified that there are no plans to transfer the zoo to the General Organization for Social Insurance, which is responsible for establishing the Grand Zoo in the Kabd area. Taqi confirmed that studies are currently underway to restore the Al-Omariya Zoo, focusing on improving the diversity of animals and enhancing the facilities for visitors.
