LOS ANGELES, Jan 25, (Agencies): The 2024 Oscar nominations caused confusion and frustration as the names of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were notably absent from the Best Actress and Best Director categories. A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences argued that this omission reflected “the ultimate in patriarchy.”

Although Robbie earned a nomination for Best Picture as a producer, and Gerwig secured a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside her husband Noah Baumbach, the absence in the Best Actress and Best Director categories was striking. Ryan Gosling received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his portrayal of Ken, and America Ferrera earned a Best Supporting Actress nod for her role in Barbie.

Expressing sadness, a source commented on the deserving recognition that seemed to be snubbed, deeming it unjust on every level. The source explained the usual process of branch nominations for each category, except for Best Picture, which is determined by votes from all members.

Using preferential ballots weighted towards voters’ top choices, the source expressed uncertainty about the algorithm in Gerwig’s case, given the film’s overall success. The comedic nature of the film may have contributed to the outcome, as comedies historically struggle for recognition at the Academy. Despite being a billion-dollar grossing comedy, the source questioned how the director of such a successful film was not acknowledged.
