LOS ANGELES, Oct 30: Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie was left stunned as she was mobbed by screaming fans and photographers while heading to a special screening of her film Maria on Monday. The 49-year-old star, whose latest role has sparked awards season buzz, struggled to navigate through a throng of admirers and was surrounded by security at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills.
As fans clamored for autographs, Jolie pleaded with them to “please stop,” expressing her inability to sign items at that moment. “Guys stop... I can’t. I’ll come back after, I can’t...” she said, as one fan shouted, “I waited the whole time!” to which Jolie replied, “I know. If you stay back, I will sign.”
Despite her requests, the crowd continued to swarm her as her security team urged fans to step back while she managed to sign some photos. “If I’ve done it, please step away. I’m stopping,” she stated, as she made her way to a waiting car. Looking out the window, she reiterated, “I’m stopping,” and asked the crowd to “please let him get out,” referring to a fan still hoping for her autograph.
Maria, directed by Pablo Larrain, features Jolie as the legendary opera singer Maria Callas during her final years in Paris in the 1970s. The film has generated significant anticipation, with fans expressing their excitement online. One user remarked, “Holy st I ... can’t wait to see this movie!!! Seriously, I know I’m going to be blown away by Angelina Jolie’s performance as Maria. The Oscar is coming for her.”
The film aims to reimagine Callas's life during her final days as the diva confronts her identity. Callas passed away in Paris in 1977 from a heart attack at the age of 53.
Maria is set to hit U.S. theaters on November 27 and will stream on Netflix starting December 11.
Jolie, a mother of six, previously won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Lisa Rowe in the 1999 psychological thriller Girl, Interrupted. She received a nomination for Best Actress in 2008 for her portrayal of Christine Collins in Changeling, but lost to Marion Cotillard, who won for her leading role in La Vie en Rose.
Throughout her career, Jolie has earned several accolades, including three Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Tony Award. Recently, she achieved halfway to EGOT status by winning her first Tony over the summer. The EGOT represents a prestigious club in U.S. entertainment, comprised of those who have won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards. Jolie now needs an Emmy and a Grammy to complete the feat, which has been achieved by only 21 individuals.
