Apple takes on AI competitors with more powerful Siri in development

NEW YORK, Nov 24: Apple is reportedly intensifying its efforts to enhance Siri and establish itself as a prominent player in the growing AI industry. According to Bloomberg, the company is developing a more conversational version of Siri powered by advanced large language models, with the project internally referred to as "Siri LLM."

The aim of this initiative is to make Siri's interactions more natural, intuitive, and capable of handling complex tasks more efficiently. This move is part of Apple's broader strategy to catch up with competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and other advanced AI-driven voice assistants.

Apple has attempted to revamp Siri several times over the years. In June, the company rolled out incremental updates, including a new glowing interface and the ability for Siri to take actions based on what's displayed on a user's screen. It is also expected that Siri will integrate with ChatGPT next month. However, Apple's plan to develop these capabilities in-house would allow the company to reduce its reliance on third-party providers, aligning better with its privacy-focused approach.

The report also mentions that Apple is already testing a standalone version of the upgraded Siri on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This new version would eventually replace the current Siri and incorporate Apple Intelligence features like text generation and summarization. The tentative launch is expected next year with iOS 19 and macOS 16, though the full rollout may occur in the year following. Bloomberg also pointed out that a recent job posting hinted at these developments, describing a team focused on creating innovative conversational assistant technologies.
