Kuwait launches 'Together 4' project to safeguard workers’ rights
KUWAIT CITY, July 16: Yesterday, the Public Authority for Manpower and the Kuwait Society for Human Rights jointly announced the launch of the "Together 4" national project aimed at safeguarding the rights of workers in Kuwait. This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing social protection measures and addressing issues faced by domestic workers in the country.
Dr. Fahd Al-Murad, Deputy Director of the Authority for Workforce Protection Affairs, highlighted the project’s objectives, stating that it includes a comprehensive review of existing laws and regulations governing the recruitment and employment of domestic workers. The goal is to introduce necessary amendments that ensure robust social protection mechanisms and swift resolution of any disputes that may arise.
During the press conference, Al-Murad emphasized the role of diplomatic missions in reporting complaints related to their communities. The Authority pledges to promptly investigate these complaints and take legal action against employers found to have violated contractual obligations. Al-Murad stressed the Authority’s commitment to collaborating with diplomatic missions, noting that some have established offices within the expatriate workers’ shelter in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh.
In addition to legal amendments, the project aims to streamline procedures for filing labor complaints and reporting mistreatment through automated services and social media platforms. The expatriate workers’ shelter in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh will continue to provide health, psychological, and residency support services, along with legal advice to female expatriate workers facing labor disputes.
The "Together 4" project underscores the Authority’s efforts to strengthen collaboration with civil society organizations. A Permanent Committee has been established to facilitate coordination with public benefit associations, exemplified by a memorandum of understanding signed with the Kuwait Society for Human Rights. This partnership is crucial in implementing Kuwait’s national strategy for protecting workers’ rights.
Khaled Al-Ajmi, Chairman of the Kuwait Society for Human Rights, highlighted the project’s comprehensive approach, which includes raising awareness among workers about their rights and duties. This initiative will offer legal consultations in multiple languages through hotlines and an electronic platform, ensuring immediate translation services. The project also involves distributing publications and guides on workers’ rights and providing support to employers seeking ethical labor practices.
Looking ahead, Al-Ajmi expressed optimism about expanding the project’s reach, aiming to assist up to 100,000 workers over the next four years. The collaborative efforts between the Authority and civil society aim to elevate Kuwait’s global standing in human rights and combat human trafficking effectively.
The "Together 4" project represents a significant stride towards reinforcing Kuwait’s commitment to protecting labor rights and ensuring fair treatment for all workers in the country.
