Bilateral Agreement Paves Way for Ethiopian Workers to Re-enter Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY, May 27: After a hiatus of several years due to various circumstances, the recruitment of Ethiopian domestic workers to Kuwait is on the verge of resuming. This follows the signing of a bilateral memorandum of understanding, with the next steps now in the hands of the Kuwaiti authorities, according to Dr. Sayed Jibril, the Ethiopian Ambassador to Kuwait.

Ambassador Jibril stated that a Kuwaiti government delegation currently in Ethiopia has signed a memorandum of understanding to resume the recruitment and employment of domestic workers. He expressed his happiness over this development, noting that the last agreement between the two countries was signed 14 years ago.

Jibril stated, “Following the signing of this memorandum, which covers all aspects of recruitment, the Ethiopian side is ready to send domestic workers to Kuwait. The implementation is now up to the Kuwaiti side.” He mentioned that the signing ceremony took place yesterday in Addis Ababa, attended by the head of the Kuwaiti delegation, Minister Plenipotentiary and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Rashid Al-Nuaimi, and representatives from the Manpower Authority, Walid Al-Khaled and Abdulaziz Khalifa, along with the Kuwaiti Ambassador to Ethiopia, Nayef Al-Otaibi.

The memorandum was signed by Ambassador Al-Otaibi on behalf of Kuwait, and by the Ethiopian Minister of Labor and Skills, Muferhat Kamel.

In a statement to KUNA, Al-Otaibi highlighted that the memorandum would enhance cooperation between the two countries and diversify the domestic labor market in Kuwait. He emphasized the importance of educating Ethiopian workers about Kuwaiti laws, legislation, and the customs and traditions of Kuwaiti households.

Minister Muferhat Kamel also stressed the Ethiopian government’s commitment to properly train and educate workers wishing to work in Kuwait, ensuring their quality and skills meet the required standards.
