CANADA, Nov 8, (Agencies): In the latter part of October, a Canadian couple celebrated the arrival of a baby who tipped the scales at nearly double the weight of an average newborn.
On Oct 23, Britteney Ayres gave birth to her fifth child, a baby boy named Sonny, through a cesarean section. To everyone's astonishment, Sonny weighed in at a hefty 14 pounds and 8 ounces, measuring approximately 21.65 inches in length (55 centimeters). This remarkable birth set a new record at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Ontario.
Sonny now joins his three older brothers, Chance Jr., aged 6, Everett, aged 5, and Lucky, aged 3, along with his older sister, Marigold, aged 1. Astonishingly, the Ayres family was no stranger to the birth of large babies, as Britteney shared that Marigold was born at 13 pounds, 14 ounces, and Lucky at 13 pounds, 11 ounces.
Dr. Asa Ahimbisibwe, the family's trusted obstetrician and gynecologist at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, said that Sonny was the largest baby born at the hospital since 2010. While Ahimbisibwe had previously delivered Everett, Lucky, and Marigold, he had anticipated a bigger baby but was taken aback by Sonny's extraordinary size. When Sonny's weight was revealed, the room filled with doctors and nurses erupted in cheers.
In comparison to the average baby boy's birth weight, which typically falls between 7 pounds, 2 ounces to 7 pounds, 6 ounces, babies considered "larger" usually weigh around 9 pounds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Guinness Book of World Records recognizes the heaviest newborn birth on record as 22 pounds in 1879, a baby who tragically passed away 11 hours after birth.
With a touch of humor, Britteney shared that their doctor had quipped, "Well, we just make big babies." She also attributed their children's size to genetics, noting that Chance's height, standing at 6 feet 2 inches, and her father's tall stature contribute to their family's tradition of welcoming larger-than-average newborns. Sonny's remarkable birth has certainly left an indelible mark at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
