LOS ANGELES, Feb 6, (Agencies): Tracy Chapman's presence at the 66th annual Grammy Awards has propelled "Fast Car" to the pinnacle of the charts. Following the collaboration between the 59-year-old singer-songwriter and Luke Combs on Sunday night, her 1988 hit swiftly claimed the No. 1 spot on iTunes within a mere 24 hours. Combs, 33, shared that the song held a special place in his heart, triggering cherished childhood memories.
According to Combs, "Fast Car" was his "favorite song before I even knew what a favorite song was." The rare joint performance featured the duo passionately singing a rendition of the classic while playing guitars. Chapman's appearance was a noteworthy event, considering her last performance in 2020 and the absence of touring since 2009. Notably, Chapman had previously performed "Fast Car" solo at the 31st annual Grammy Awards in February 1989.
Combs had released his cover of the track in April 2023, swiftly gaining popularity and reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, topping the country music charts. The recording earned a nomination for the best country solo performance of the song at the recent Grammy Awards. Additionally, "Fast Car" clinched both single of the year and song of the year at the 2023 Country Music Association Awards.
In a sentimental reflection last December, Combs revealed that "Fast Car" held a special connection to memories of his father, Chester Combs. Recalling moments from his childhood, Combs shared, "When I was 5 years old, my dad and I would be in his truck, and he would always play music for me. He had a Tracy Chapman cassette tape, and 'Fast Car' is one of the first songs I remember. I’ve always been a huge fan of it and think of my dad and our time together when I hear it."
