China opens new embassy in Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 19: Foreign Affairs Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya has announced upcoming high-level visits between Kuwait and China, emphasizing that “these visits are ongoing”, while describing the Chinese-Kuwaiti relations as “excellent”. In a press statement after attending the inauguration of the new embassy building of the People’s Republic of China in Mishref diplomatic district with several diplomats, ambassadors and citizens in attendance, Al-Yahya extended his congratulations to Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jianwei on the occasion. He commended the strong cooperation between the two nations and expressed optimism over advancing bilateral ties, in line with the aspirations of both countries’ leaders and peoples. He pointed out that the opening of the embassy in Mishref marks a significant step in enhancing Kuwait-China relations. He affirmed that the two countries have started taking steps to implement their agreements, expressing satisfaction with such progress. He assured that Kuwait is ready to accelerate the implementation of vital projects; acknowledging that while some of these projects may take time due to the need for preparatory work, others could proceed more swiftly.

On the other hand, Jianwei underscored the strategic importance of the Mubarak Port project for Kuwait, since it is an integral part of the agreements made during His Highness Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al- Jaber Al-Sabah’s visit to China last year. He explained that the first phase of the port project took more than 10 years and it required a thorough reassessment of designs to adapt to current conditions. He expressed confidence in overcoming challenges, citing the experience of the large Chinese government company involved in the project and the strong coordination between both sides. “We are optimistic about the future of this project, but it will require patience and continuous effort,” he said. He also thanked Al-Yahya and the other attendees, recognizing the deep-rooted friendship between the two countries. He highlighted the importance that Kuwait’s leadership places on the development of Chinese-Kuwaiti relations. On the occasion of the first anniversary of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal’s ascension to power, Jianwei extended his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for His Highness’ health, success and continued leadership. He hopes for further progress and prosperity for Kuwait.

Reflecting on the significance of the year 2024 for Sino-Kuwaiti relations, he stated that the opening of the new embassy marks a milestone in the diplomatic ties between the two countries. “Despite the diplomatic relations dating back to 1971, the continued growth of these relations made the embassy’s previous rented facilities unsuitable. The new headquarters, which began construction in 2019 and was completed in 2024, reflects the strong and ongoing partnership between the two nations,” he revealed. He put the spotlight on the support of Kuwaiti government agencies like the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy and Kuwait Municipality; as well as the Chinese companies and the Chinese community in Kuwait. He expressed deep appreciation for everyone who contributed to the embassy’s construction. He added that 2024 is an important year for Sino-Kuwaiti relations, considering the significant progress of projects stemming from the consensus between Chinese President Xi Jinping and His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal. “Trade relations between the two countries remain strong, with China continuing to be Kuwait’s largest trading partner and the people-topeople exchanges are flourishing,” he stressed. Before the inauguration ceremony, Jianwei held a press conference, during which he praised the strengthening of Chinese-Kuwaiti relations throughout 2024; particularly in terms of trade, cultural exchange and deepening mutual political trust
