LOS ANGELES, Dec 20: George Clooney has publicly addressed the passing of Matthew Perry, revealing that the “Friends” actor struggled with happiness during the show’s production. Clooney shared these sentiments in an interview published in Deadline on Tuesday while discussing his new film, “The Boys In the Boat.” He delved into his friendship with Perry, dating back to the ’90s when they first connected over paddle ball.

During their initial meeting, Perry, at the age of 16, was passionately pursuing success and a role in a sitcom. Clooney fondly described Perry as a “great, funny, funny, funny kid.” Perry expressed his aspiration to Clooney, saying, “I just want to get on a regular sitcom, and I would be the happiest man on earth.”

Perry’s wish came true when he secured the role of Chandler Bing on “Friends,” a show Clooney acknowledged as “probably one of the best” TV series. However, despite this achievement, Perry continued to grapple with discontent, as Clooney revealed that the success “didn’t bring him joy or happiness or peace.”

Clooney recalled working alongside Perry on the Warner Brothers lot, expressing that it was challenging to witness Perry’s struggles without understanding the depth of his issues. Clooney admitted his lack of awareness about Perry’s daily struggles, including the actor reportedly taking 12 Vicodin a day.

Emphasizing that money and success don’t guarantee happiness, Clooney stressed the importance of finding contentment within oneself and one’s life.

As known, Perry’s cause of death was attributed to “the acute effects of ketamine,” a drug used for depression treatment and sometimes recreationally. The L.A. Coroner identified additional factors, including drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine, a substance used in opioid addiction treatment.

In October, Perry was found unresponsive in his hot tub, leading to his unfortunate demise despite efforts by first responders to revive him.
