Kuwait Vows to Fight Cyber Extortion and Safeguard Public

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 24: Brigadier Nasser Abu Saleeb, Director General of the General Department of Relations and Security Media at the Ministry of Interior (MOI), emphasized today, Tuesday, the ministry’s commitment to spreading awareness messages as part of the 2024-2025 academic year campaign. The goal is to combat electronic blackmail and protect citizens and residents from falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.

In a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Abu Saleeb said that students in primary and middle school are the most targeted by individuals with malicious intent. He added that many parents do not fully grasp the dangers posed by some online video games, which enable interaction and participation between players, potentially exposing children to risks such as cyber extortion. He urged parents to protect their children and constantly monitor their online activities.

Abu Saleeb pointed out that the increasing number of cases related to online games now requires serious action from all parties, especially parents. He explained that the Ministry of Interior's awareness and security campaign for the 2024-2025 academic year focuses on sending a clear message to parents, emphasizing their critical role in protecting their children from online dangers.

He clarified that the ministry's role is to apprehend the criminals involved in these crimes, while the primary responsibility lies with the family. Parents must monitor the apps and games their children use and understand the negative impacts that may arise.

He added that over the past three years, the ministry has handled a large number of cases involving various forms of defamation and extortion, especially financial extortion. He stressed the importance of increasing parental awareness to take preventive measures and protect their children from falling into such problems.

He urged everyone to reach out to the Cyber Crimes Department through WhatsApp at the number (97283939) or via the department’s social media accounts (@ECCCD) for assistance. (KUNA)
