KUWAIT CITY, Nov 14: The Criminal Court sentenced a police officer to five-year imprisonment and imposed a KD 2,000 fine in a case filed against him for exploiting his position to demand bribes and deport expatriates by fabricating charges of alcohol trafficking. The Public Prosecution had ordered the detention of the officer who was stationed at a police station for investigations on accusations leveled against him of soliciting bribes from Asian expatriates after falsely accusing them of alcohol trafficking, detaining them under unlawful conditions and then blackmailing them. The accused officer was interrogated and confronted with the charges against him. Following this, the Ministry of Interior issued a press release confirming that the accused police officer had been referred to the Public Prosecution. The officer was apprehended by the Criminal Security Sector, represented by the General Department of Criminal Investigations’ Criminal Investigation and Licensing Department, for abusing his authority. He was found to have accepted large bribes in exchange for detaining and deporting members of the Asian community after fabricating charges of alcohol trafficking against them
