LONDON, July 1: A cricket fan celebrating India's T20 World Cup victory suffered a dramatic fall from a London Underground sign, plunging more than 20 feet in scenes captured on camera. The incident occurred as the man attempted to tie a flag to a pole atop the Tube sign outside Queensbury station.
Onlookers screamed in horror as the man lost his grip and fell to the pavement below. He was later pictured being helped to his feet with a bloodied face as paramedics arrived. While police did not attend the scene, the London Ambulance Service confirmed the man was transported to a major trauma center for treatment.
“We were called at 7:36 pm on Saturday 29 June to reports of an incident on Queensbury Station Parade,” an ambulance spokesman told Telegraph Sport. “We sent multiple resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, and an incident response officer. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance. We treated a man at the scene before taking him to a major trauma center as a priority.”
The fall took place amid widespread celebrations among London’s Indian community after India clinched the T20 World Cup for the first time in 13 years. The thrilling final saw South Africa needing 26 runs from 24 balls to chase down a target of 177. The game turned dramatically when Heinrich Klaasen, who scored 52 off 27 balls, was dismissed. Arshdeep Singh conceded only four runs in the penultimate over, leaving Hardik Pandya to defend 16 runs in the final over.
David Miller was caught by Suryakumar Yadav at long-off for 21 runs from the first ball of the final over, sealing India’s seven-run victory. India avenged their World Cup final loss in October, buoyed by star performances from Virat Kohli, who scored 76 off 59 balls, and Jasprit Bumrah, who took two wickets for 18 runs in four overs.
“We stuck together as a team even though at one point it looked like it was going South Africa’s way and we wanted this really bad,” said the winning captain Rohit Sharma. “We wanted to win this, to win a tournament like this. I’m very proud of the boys we have and the management as well.”
