LISBON, Nov 5: Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a record-breaking career with Portugal that began more than 23 years ago.

The 41-year-old forward made the announcement on Thursday, saying he would return Portugal’s iconic No. 7 shirt after the November international break.

Ronaldo’s final scheduled international matches are against Denmark on November 14 and Wales on November 17 in the UEFA Nations League. Portugal are set to host Denmark before travelling to Wales for the second fixture.

Record-breaking career
Ronaldo made his senior international debut against Kazakhstan in August 2003 and leaves Portugal as the country's most-capped player and all-time leading scorer, with 234 appearances and 146 goals.

He captained Portugal to their first major international trophy at Euro 2016 and was also part of the teams that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

In his retirement message, Ronaldo described the decision as difficult, saying it was made with both his head and his heart. He thanked his family, the Portuguese people, teammates, coaches and staff who had been part of his 23-year international journey.

“If I ever made you happy, if one of my goals ever made you hug someone, forget a worry or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it,” he said.

Ronaldo's retirement applies to international football and does not mean the end of his playing career at club level. He continues to play for Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr.

His departure closes one of the most decorated chapters in international football, with his records for men's international goals and appearances setting a remarkable benchmark for future generations.
