DENMARK, June 8: Denmark's Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, faced an unexpected disruption to her election campaign as she was attacked in a Copenhagen square, prompting the cancellation of several scheduled events. Frederiksen's office confirmed that she underwent a check-up at a hospital following the incident.
The prime minister sustained "a minor whiplash" during the attack on Friday, according to a statement released by her office on Saturday. Although Frederiksen is reportedly in good condition, she was understandably shaken by the incident.
The perpetrator, identified as a 39-year-old male, is set to appear in court later on Saturday to face charges related to the assault.
With Danish politicians actively campaigning ahead of the upcoming European Parliament elections, Frederiksen, 46, had been engaging in public appearances alongside candidates from her Social Democrats party. Reports from local media suggest that the attack occurred while Frederiksen was meeting someone at a cafe, underscoring the unexpected nature of the incident during a typically routine campaign activity.
