LOS ANGELES, Dec 13: Minnie Driver recently disclosed the reason behind her seemingly "devastated" expression while witnessing Matt Damon and Ben Affleck receive the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for "Good Will Hunting" in 1998. A clip of Affleck and Damon's acceptance speech resurfaced on the Movie Shmood Instagram account, prompting a user to remark on Driver's somber appearance. In response, Driver directly addressed the comment, revealing that Matt had ended their relationship a few weeks before the Oscars and attended the event with his new girlfriend, leaving her heartbroken.

Expressing her sentiment further, Driver commented, "Wish I could have celebrated more as it was an amazing moment for all of us, and for this wonderful film," alongside a post where she typed "My face" with four crying laughing emojis and a red heart.

Driver and Damon had met while portraying love interests in the Boston-set psychological drama, dating from 1997 to 1998. However, by the time of the 1998 Oscars, Damon had entered a relationship with Winona Ryder.

Before the Academy Awards, Damon publicly confirmed the breakup on The Oprah Winfrey Show, stating, “I was with Minnie for a while, but we’re not romantically involved anymore, we’re just really good friends. I love her dearly.” Driver, in a 1998 interview with the Los Angeles Times, criticized Damon for publicly announcing their breakup on a platform like Oprah and remarked on his declarations of love for her on David Letterman a month earlier.

In 2017, following Damon's characterization of the #MeToo movement, Driver condemned him on Twitter, expressing disbelief and suggesting that individuals like Damon were "systemically part of the problem."

Addressing their past, Driver shared during an appearance on the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast, "We’re not friends, but I feel an enormous amount of love for him because we shared this inflection point, well it was an inflection point for me. I think it’s okay to call people out if you’re willing to stand by what you believe." She also emphasized the importance of growth and learning from such experiences.
