Efforts underway to regulate kiosks and booths in Kuwait's cooperatives

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 5: The Ministry of Social Affairs, through the Cooperative Development Department, is working with the Kuwait Municipality to amend the legal status of kiosks and booths located within central markets and cooperative branches. This collaboration aims to ensure these establishments obtain the necessary licenses to operate, preventing violations from being recorded against them by municipal inspectors or other government bodies.

Sources from the Ministry indicate that many of these kiosks and booths currently lack authorization from the Municipality, which limits the Ministry’s ability to facilitate approvals for unlicensed activities. To address this, the Ministry, focused on creating profitable services for shareholders and generating revenue for cooperatives, has held several meetings with Municipality representatives. These discussions aim to determine which activities may be licensed, as long as they do not inconvenience cooperative visitors or obstruct movement during emergencies.

According to these sources, permissible activities could include women’s accessories, sweets, snack sales, mobile phone accessories, and similar ventures. The Ministry is considering consolidating kiosks and booths into designated areas within cooperatives to maximize their utility and improve organization, addressing complaints from shareholders about disorganization and scattered placement within cooperatives.
