Electricity Ministry Rules Out Power Ships, Cites Grid Stability

KUWAIT CITY, Sep 29: Sources from the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy have dismissed the proposal to introduce power generation ships to Kuwait as a means to bolster the electricity grid for the upcoming summer season.

According to the sources, a committee tasked with evaluating electricity project initiatives concluded that this proposal is not feasible due to several technical challenges that cannot be addressed at this time. They noted that countries typically resort to power generation ships when their electricity grids lack stability; however, Kuwait's grid is one of the most reliable.

The committee further assessed various energy purchase initiatives and determined that they are prohibitively expensive compared to the cost at which the ministry currently generates electricity. Additionally, these initiatives would require the ministry to secure land and cover operating fuel costs.

On another note, the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy has received a request from the Public Authority for Housing Welfare to provide 3,600 megawatts of electricity for the cities of South Sabah Al-Ahmad and South Saad Al-Abdullah.

The sources explained that this request aligns with the Public Institution for Housing Care’s strategy for developing new residential cities, aimed at ensuring the availability of electricity for new plots. This initiative reflects ongoing collaboration between the ministry and the housing institution to accurately assess the electricity and water needs of these emerging residential areas.
