Ban on sale of ‘chapathis’, ‘samosas’ in schools

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 9: The Public Authority for Food and Nutrition (PAFN) has identified violations in school cafeterias, where prohibited items, including energy drinks and soft drinks, have been found available to students. These items contravene cafeteria regulations intended to protect children’s health and limit unhealthy options within educational facilities.

The PAFN alerted the Ministry of Education about machines dispensing chips, as well as the daily sale of items such as chapati, samosa, stuffed grape leaves, and pizza not permitted under the cafeteria guidelines. Officials are urging strict adherence to these restrictions, which are designed to support student safety and well-being.

This recent PAFN action aligns with broader efforts to reform school cafeterias as part of a national initiative to combat childhood obesity in Kuwait. The initiative also includes the regulation of food vendors and approval of certified nutrition companies to ensure healthier options for students.

In response, the Authority has requested the Ministry of Education to implement urgent corrective actions to ensure full compliance with school cafeteria standards, safeguarding student health.
