KUWAIT CITY, Nov 2: Kuwait has issued a series of decrees revoking the citizenship of 168 individuals, including Hassan Abdul Hadi Ali Hajjia, a former death row inmate convicted in the high-profile Al-Abdali cell case, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
Decree No. 181 of 2024, published in Kuwait Alyawm, specifically targets Hajjia, who was initially sentenced to death in 2016 for his role as the primary defendant in the Al-Abdali cell case. While the Court of Appeal upheld this sentence, the Court of Cassation intervened in 2017, commuting it to life imprisonment.
Hajjia’s charges included actions deemed harmful to Kuwait’s unity and territorial integrity, as well as alleged communication with Iran and Hezbollah. His case was part of a larger trial involving 15 defendants. In addition to Hajjia’s case, two other decrees have stripped citizenship from numerous individuals:
Decree No. 180 of 2024 revoked citizenship from 37 women
Decree No. 182 of 2024 targeted 130 women and others who had acquired citizenship through familial dependency
