Fire blamed on sabotage hits gas pipeline in eastern Syria, halting supplies

DAMASCUS, Sept 29: A fire blamed on sabotage struck a gas pipeline in eastern Syria on Monday, disrupting supplies from the Jbessa gas plant to power-generation stations, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported.

The fire broke out on a pipeline between Al-Shoula and Deir ez-Zor, according to SANA. Hisham al-Saleh, a gas sector official at the Syrian Petroleum Company, said the blaze halted the flow of gas from the Jbessa plant to electricity-generation stations. Firefighting teams isolated the damaged section and continued efforts to extinguish the fire as gas pressure in the area declined. Earlier, local sources told Anadolu that Syrian civil defense teams had been sent to the site near Al-Shoula to contain the blaze.
