Acting Chief of the Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSD), Major General Khaled Fahad, emphasized on Monday the fire service's commitment to safeguarding lives and property, efficiently handling accidents, minimizing their adverse effects, and enhancing community awareness of accident prevention. Speaking at a workshop organized by the Kuwait Society for Protection from Fire Hazards, titled "Lessons Learned...Prevention of Major Accidents," Fahad highlighted the importance of developing a risk matrix to classify risks as major or minor. This classification, he noted, would enhance the efficiency of risk management.
Fahad also pointed out that risks can be both human-made and natural, such as earthquakes and floods. He stressed that effective risk reduction, community security, and minimizing losses in lives and property rely on prior accident assessment, training, community awareness, and optimal use of modern technology.
Former Chief of the General Fire Force and honorary member of the association, Lieutenant General (retired) Yousef Al-Ansari, explained that the workshop aimed to bring together relevant officials, civil authorities, firefighting equipment companies, and safety consulting firms to share insights and experiences. The goal was to achieve the workshop's objectives and emphasize that security and safety are a collective responsibility, particularly for specialists who play a crucial role in educating and guiding society.
Adel Al-Nassar, Chairman of the Kuwait Society for Protection from Fire Hazards, commended the workshop's recommendations, which highlighted the need to reduce accident rates, recover swiftly, and prevent future incidents. He noted the successful delivery of their message through active participation from state sector representatives, private sector members, and relevant authorities. Nassar emphasized that safety and accident prevention should be integrated into daily life, not just seen as routine practices. He also underscored the importance of risk, crisis, and disaster management in both normal and emergencies and advocated for specialized training to improve field performance.
Looking ahead, Nassar announced the organization of the "Second Civil Safety and Protection Conference" next February. This conference will gather government officials, public benefit associations, private sector representatives, and international experts in prevention, disaster, and crisis management to enhance emergency preparedness and response strategies.
The workshop featured dialogue sessions with officials from various ministries, academics, and experts in crisis and disaster management. The first session focused on combating accidents and handling crises, while the second session addressed emergency preparedness and the use of technology in safety and civil protection.
