Rare complication: Man’s intestines protrude after sneezing during meal.

NEW YORK, June 26: In a startling medical case reported in the May 2024 edition of the American Journal of Medical Case Reports, a 63-year-old man in Florida experienced a severe complication while dining with his wife. The incident occurred following a forceful sneeze, which unexpectedly caused parts of his intestines to protrude through a recent surgical wound on his abdomen.

The man, who remains unnamed in the report, had undergone a cystectomy — a surgical procedure to remove his urinary bladder — due to complications following prostate cancer treatments. Just 15 days before the diner incident, he had undergone this surgery, leaving him with a healing wound on his abdomen.

According to medical experts, the morning of the incident seemed routine, with doctors noting satisfactory healing progress and considering the removal of staples holding the wound together. To celebrate, the man and his wife went out for breakfast at a local diner.

“During breakfast, the man sneezed forcefully, followed by coughing. He immediately noticed a ‘wet’ sensation and pain in his lower abdomen. Looking down, he observed several loops of pink bowel protruding from his recent surgical site,” the researchers detailed in their report.

Realizing the seriousness of the situation, the man covered the protruding bowel with his shirt and quickly called for medical assistance. Paramedics arrived promptly, providing pain relief and carefully transporting him to a nearby hospital.

Upon arrival, medical professionals assessed his condition and proceeded with caution. “Three Urologic surgeons carefully reduced the eviscerated bowel back into the abdominal cavity,” the report continued. “They inspected the full length of the small bowel and noted no evidence of injury.”

The case, according to the journal, underscores significant gaps in existing medical literature concerning wound complications such as dehiscence—where wounds reopen or burst post-surgery. “While wound dehiscence is a well-known complication, this case is important because evisceration through the abdominal surgical site after cystectomy is poorly described in the medical literature,” the article concluded.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the unexpected and sometimes severe consequences that can arise even during routine activities following major surgeries.
