Fraudsters Use Fake Offers to Steal Banking Information

KUWAIT CITY, Sep 18: A security source has issued a warning about gangs targeting Kuwaitis and expats by promoting food and consumer goods at prices as low as a quarter of their market value. These gangs, engaging in fraud and deception, entice individuals to enter their full banking details, which are then used to drain the victims’ bank accounts.

The source highlighted several cases where citizens and expats were swindled through attractive offers for food and consumer products on social media. These schemes typically involve gangs insisting on payments made through an app. If the customer opts for cash payment, they are asked to pay a small amount, usually half a dinar, via a link or by entering their information into the application.

The "Cybercrimes" department recently reported the suspension of 662 fraudulent "WhatsApp" accounts linked to Kuwaiti phone numbers. They also provided guidelines to help users differentiate between legitimate and fake links.

Authorities continue to monitor and block fake websites regularly while enforcing legal measures to combat illegal activities and protect individuals from falling victim to scams. The "Security Media" department urged people to only use trusted websites and services, emphasizing the importance of verifying the authenticity of any website before making purchases or providing personal information through the "My Identity" application.

Additionally, the public has been warned against clicking on suspicious links found in search engines or on social media platforms, particularly "WIX.COM" website domains, which are flagged as untrustworthy. Users are advised to carefully read the domain name in links to avoid falling victim to hacking or theft.
