GCC urges UN to boost support for Gaza reconstruction efforts
Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the United Nations, Ambassador Tariq Al-Bannai

NEW YORK, Jan 16: On Thursday, the Permanent Delegations of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states to the United Nations called on the international community to intensify efforts to support initiatives aimed at rebuilding the Gaza Strip. They reiterated that a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, based on the two-state solution, is the only viable path to peace.

The statement was delivered by Ambassador Tariq Al-Bannai, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on behalf of the GCC member states during a session dedicated to discussing the priorities of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for the current year. In his address to Guterres and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, Al-Bannai expressed deep appreciation for the leadership of the United Nations during these challenging times, acknowledging the UN's tireless efforts to promote peace and dialogue.

Al-Bannai emphasized the importance of rallying around peace and dialogue to address global challenges and reduce the risks of disasters. He reaffirmed the GCC’s unwavering support for the UN system, underscoring its role as a vital platform for promoting multilateral cooperation and advancing shared human values.

The ambassador addressed the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing the region’s suffering under the Israeli occupation as a tragedy that has persisted for more than a year. He acknowledged the efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and the United States in brokering a ceasefire agreement, and praised the crucial role played by the United Nations and its agencies in providing assistance and protecting civilians in Gaza.

Al-Bannai also highlighted the growing humanitarian needs in Gaza, expressing concern over the funding gap that has hindered relief efforts. He urged donor countries to increase their financial support to ensure that aid reaches all those in need, emphasizing that the GCC countries remain committed to supporting the UN’s humanitarian initiatives. He further stressed the importance of distinguishing between humanitarian funding and development or climate funding to ensure the efficient allocation of resources.

The ambassador also addressed the issue of climate change, calling for collective action to involve the international community in efforts to mitigate and adapt to its impacts. He commended the recent conferences held in the region and expressed hope that tangible progress would be made in addressing the challenges posed by climate change, particularly for developing and least developed countries.

On the topic of artificial intelligence, Al-Bannai noted that AI represents a significant turning point in development and innovation. While recognizing its potential, he cautioned that its misuse could exacerbate global challenges. The GCC called for the establishment of guidelines for AI technology to ensure that developing countries benefit from it without widening the technological gap.

The Gulf Group expressed its full readiness to continue working with UN member states to address current challenges, both political and objective. The group also emphasized the need for enhanced international efforts through the five major UN events scheduled for this year, including the Second World Summit for Social Development, the High-Level Political Forum, the Fourth International Conference on Women, the High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases, and the High-Level International Conference on a Peaceful Solution to the Palestinian Issue. These events are seen as critical opportunities to advance the common interests of all humanity and work toward a lasting resolution to the Palestinian conflict.
