KUWAIT CITY,Oct 8,:Yousef Al-Shamlan, a member of Kuwait national fencing team, achieved a remarkable feat by capturing the coveted gold medal in the saber discipline at the "Satellite" World Cup tournament hosted in Kuwait. In a thrilling final showdown, he triumphed over Italy's national team representative, Gergi Marciano, with a final score of 15-11. Al-Shamlan's victory not only secured his place in history as the first Kuwaiti athlete to claim a gold medal in this prestigious event but also added another significant accomplishment to his impressive record, following his bronze medal achievement at the 19th Asian Games in China.
Abdulkarim Al-Shamlan, the head of the Kuwaiti Fencing Federation, emphasized the significance of the World Cup (Satellite) for saber fencing, as it is a crucial tournament recognized by the International Federation of the sport for its role in accumulating points towards qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics. He noted that the tournament featured 35 of the world's finest fencing talents, hailing from 16 different countries, comprising the elite in the sport. This formidable competition undoubtedly raised the event's level to new heights.
Highlighting Al-Shamlan's outstanding accomplishment, Abdulkarim noted that he is the very first Kuwaiti athlete to secure a gold medal in the World Cup Satellite Fencing Championship, earning a perfect score of 4 points that will contribute to his overall qualification points tally for the upcoming Paris Olympics. He revealed that Al-Shamlan is slated to participate in several upcoming tournaments over the current and subsequent months, with official confirmation of his Olympic qualification expected in December.
