NEW YORK, Aug 7: Google has announced the discontinuation of its Chromecast brand after 11 years, pulling both the 4K and HD Chromecast hardware from the market. However, the company is not stepping away from the streaming device sector. Instead, Google is launching the Google TV Streamer, a new product designed to compete with high-end streaming devices such as Apple TV and Roku Ultra.
The Google TV Streamer is distinct from its predecessors, featuring a different design and a higher price point. The new device will replace the $50 4K Chromecast with Google TV USB dongle and the $30 HD-only Chromecast variant. The Google TV Streamer will be available for $100 and offers a range of upgrades over the previous models.
Unlike the Chromecast dongles, the Google TV Streamer is a full HDMI set-top box, offering significant improvements in performance and features. It boasts a processor up to 22 percent faster than its predecessors, double the RAM (4GB), and quadruple the storage (32GB). The device supports 4K streaming at 60 fps through an HDMI 2.1a port, along with HDR support (Dolby Vision) and spatial audio (Dolby Atmos). It also includes an Ethernet port, a feature not found in the old dongles.
One notable difference is that the Google TV Streamer does not come with an HDMI cable, which may require additional purchase. Despite this, many users will already have spare HDMI cables available.
The new Google TV Streamer integrates Google Gemini AI features, allowing users to receive summaries or reviews of TV episodes or entire seasons on command. It also builds customized watchlists based on recommendations for each household member. The device's AI capabilities enhance content suggestions throughout the software.
In addition to its streaming capabilities, the Google TV Streamer functions as a smart home hub, compatible with Thread and Matter integration. It can control Google Home or Matter-compliant devices such as cameras and thermostats. The device includes a built-in Thread border router to improve connectivity.
The Google TV Streamer is now available for preorders and is set to begin shipping on September 26. This launch aligns with Google's effort to renew interest in its Nest line of smart home products.
